Open Data for Enterprise
    Thursday October 11, 2012 11:00am - 1:00pm @ Room Bruxelles

Open Forges Summit
    Thursday October 11, 2012 11:00am - 1:00pm @ Room Luxembourg

Since the rise of Facebook there has been much discussion about people building walled gardens with open source software, but it seems like we've almost forgotten that many of us have built open source software behind someone else’s walled garden.

During the 2010 summit we spent a day discussing the so-called data-jail issue. Last year at the OWF we explored a possible solution for the problem based on interoperability between forges.

This year we want to look at how the landscape has changed; which opportunities allow projects to keep full control over their data, and which initiatives the EU is driving to address the issue. Academics, industry players and open forge advocates will illuminate this immersive half-day event. If you care about your project's freedom, this summit is one you won't want to miss!

    -----------------

11:00   Introduction:  Roberto Galoppini, Track Chair

11:05  A forge is just a tool, but is it the right tool? Ross Gardler, Apache Software Foundation

The law of the instrument states "if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail" (Maslow, 1966).

Software forges collect project artifacts and provide tools for project management. They do not build software, they do not write or test software, they do not attract users or contributors. Yet it is the people that are important. Without the people there would be no artefacts and thus no forges.

Forges, today, don't make it easy to discover the individuals and the communities behind the software. We typically find the project through some other means and then navigate to the forge. From there we start to examine the community and the people behind the project. Are forges missing an opportunity here? Can we improve the way people discover the all important people and communities behind the projects?

11:25  Open Forges and Open App Stores: Joining the dots, Scott Wilson, OSS Watch

Although both forges and app stores provide infrastructure for distributing software, they do so with different audiences in mind, and operate under different sets of constraints. App store users want to be able to easily find, evaluate and use software, wherever the code may live;  can we do a better job for users than just providing a download link or a link to the project page? There are also some significant barriers between app stores and open source forges that need to be overcome, such as (in)compatibility of open source licenses and app store T&Cs.

There is also rarely a "live" connection between the store and the source repository, for example automatic updating of metadata, features and screenshots. Can we create better links between forges and stores?

Can we also do a better job for users than just providing a download link or a link to the project page? Projects and services such as Apache Cordova, 5Apps and PhoneGap Build show its possible to bridge the gap between open source development processes and app stores for mobile apps - but what about for other kinds of software?

    11:45  Stijin Goedertier,ADMS Working Group

In his talk, Stijn will outline the future plans for the AMDS.SW metadata vocabulary (http://joinup.ec.europa.eu/asset/adms_foss/description).  ADMS.SW is a metadata vocabulary to describe software making it possible to more easily explore, find, and link software on the Web. The specification maximally reuses existing specifications, such as DOAP, SPDX, ISO 19770-2, ADMS, and the Trove software map.  By using ADMS.SW to describe software, publishers increase its discoverability and enable applications to consume software metadata more easily. It allows software publishers to:

    - provide unique identifiers to software projects, software releases, and software packages through HTTP URIs and ISO 19770-2 identifying systems;
    - keep their own system for documenting and storing software;
    - improve indexing and visibility of software;
    - describe software in a common way so that it can be seamlessly cross-queried and discovered through a single access point (e.g. Joinup);
    - retrieve, compare and potentially link software to one another; and
    - identify software to be reused avoiding duplication and expensive development work.

12:05  Olivier Berger & Christian Bayle (FusionForge)

Advances on interoperability of FLOSS forges from the COCLICO projects, which have been implemented in FusionForge and other FLOSS platforms.

12:25  Empowering FLOSS in European Projects, Miguel Ponce de Leon, PROSE eu-funded project

Miguel will share the goals of the EU funded PROSE project, who's objective is to accelerate the adoption of open source software on EU ICT projects. The presentation will highlight the projects plans to increase the lifetime of the software developed inside European projects and thus maximizing projects’ impacts. The presentation will show the creation and management of a platform for FLOSS project management, the development of a training program on legal and business aspects pertaining to FLOSS adoption and shall provide insight on a dissemination program to promote the adoption of a FLOSS-driven model in EU ICT projects.

12:45  Open Source and Agility , faster innovation for Tuleap forge, Laurent Charles, Enalean, Tuleap Open ALM

Enalean is the provider of Tuleap Open ALM, an open source software forge. Enalean is the only provider to deliver its enterprise software forge entirely under free GPL license. In the same time, main innovations and good practices in software engineering are propulsed by free communities. As an example, just look at SVN, Git or Hudson/Jenkins that are proof their efficiently. Enterprises where software innovation is a key for being competitive know that very well. That’s why they widely deploy free softwares within their development teams.  To tailor these softwares to their process and needs, enterprises choose between: asking an IT service company to make specific developments, investing in an on-site-team or waiting for next version of softwares.

To offer them an alternative, Enalean team decided to offer an innovative approach, implementing agile and open source principles.Indeed, gathering the assets of open source and agility faster innovation and new developments for forges. Tuleap customers, mainly worldwide industrial organizations, have quickly understood the gains: more contributions, exchanges, quality developments that really match their needs while staying free and independent.

The discussion will share feedback on customers stories and keys to succeed with a such approach.

Open Source From research Labs to Enterprise IT
    Thursday October 11, 2012 11:00am - 1:00pm @ Room Dublin

Software is a pervasive element in research, not only in Computer Science, for which it is natural to produce software artifact, but in all other disciplines too, where the need to manage and elaborate information pushes researchers to develop and maintain significant software tools. Open Source software coming from these research activities is a really interesting object for technology transfer, which is essential to produce the innovation on which the competitiveness of modern industry relies. By simplifying matters related to intellectual property, and building collaborative communities, Open Source software lends itself very naturally to fluid transfer and innovation activities. The path from the publishing of open source research software to the publishing of commercial one is a long maturation process which requires specific know-how. Several models will be presented and discussed by researchers being starting spin-off and by SMEs with successful stories. Expected attendees should mainly be researchers, TTOs (Technology Transfer Officers) and software publishing companies CTOs and CEOs who should be interested in this high-value software production.

This track is organized in 6 slots of 20 (15 of presentation + 5 of discussions) minutes with the following themas and speakers:

    ---------------------

11:00   Introduction:  Simon Phipps & Bruno Cornec, Track Chairs

11:05  Recent Trends in Open Source Licensing, Richard Fontana

Over the past couple of years there have been influential claims that the "market share" among open source projects for the long-dominant GPL license family has been shrinking, in favor of noncopyleft licenses such as the Apache License 2.0. In this talk I will critically examine such claims and place them in historical context. I will argue that there are a number of reasons why a GPL decline might be expected to have occurred (regardless of what particular statistics purport to show), both intrinsic and extrinsic to the GPL family itself. I will discuss some of the interesting reactions to the supposition of GPL decline, particularly from copyleft advocates. The possibility of a more significant role for weak copyleft licenses (particularly MPL 2.0 and EPL) in projects of commercial significance will be examined, and I will discuss ways in which interest in strong copyleft licensing might be increased, and why this is of value. I will briefly discuss the license-drafting project I recently initiated (copyleft-next), which in many respects is a reaction to my thoughts about the possibility of a decline in GPL dominance.

11:30  SpagoBI suite: moving from LGPLv2 to MPLv2: lesson learned, business and community improvement, Gabrielle Ruffatti

At beginning of 2002 I was excited when the new Mozilla Public License v2 was announced: a significant step to simplify the OSS licensing approach. The new MPLv2 is really  a simpler, shorter, understandable (also by non legal people), modern license favoring code reuse and redistribution because it solves major compatibility issues. After few months, SpagoWorld board decided to explore how to move the open source licenses adopted by the projects  from LGPLv2 to MPLv2 starting from SpagoBI suite. An opportunity to assess the current status of the compliance of the licenses of the various software components included in the project, to modernize the project license choice and to provide more flexibility to users. What were the challenges, the process and the impact on the SpagoBI community? 3 months after the release of the new licensed suite version, what are the results and the impact on related business activities? Lessons learned and practical tips.

12:55 Collaborative GPL Compliance Through Non-Profit Entities, Bradley Kuhn

The Software Freedom Conservancy recently announced a renewed effort for cross-project collaborative GPL compliance efforts that includes copyright holders from BusyBox, Linux, and Samba.  Conservancy built an internal system of communication and collaboration to take input from all stakeholders to discuss and engage in compliance activity to ensure compliance with the GPL throughout the technology industry and in particular in the embedded device market where Linux, BusyBox and Samba are so prevalent. In this talk, Executive Director of Conservancy, Bradley M. Kuhn, will discuss how Conservancy handles compliance matters, what matters it focuses on, and how the copyright holders that work with Conservancy engage in a collaborative effort to ensure compliance with the GPL.

12:20 Patents and Cloud Deployment, Robert Blasi

End users and companies are moving away from proprietary IT infrastructures to hosted services, and patent holders are not far behind them. Come join Robert Blasi, a patent attorney with extensive experience in open source and cloud computing, for a discussion of patents and how they apply to cloud computing, and how to address these issues in your cloud initiatives.

Association Ecosystem
    Thursday October 11, 2012 1:00pm - 3:30pm @ Room Londres

Community Summit: Open Source software communities in the age of cloud computing
    Thursday October 11, 2012 1:30pm - 5:30pm @ Room Bruxelles

For the fifth year running, the Community Summit addresses the key issues impacting the growth and management of open source communities. This year, free and open source software communities leaders at the Summit will look at the challenges posed by the emergence of cloud computing to their communities and will ponder on new vendor lock-in strategies, the repositioning of software, the necessary linkage with open data, etc.

In this session we will debate on the changes brought by the emergence of cloud computing to the roles and functioning of free and open source software communities.

Free and open source software communities developed on the basis of one fundamental principle and four freedoms. The fundamental principle is the ability to access the code. And the four freedoms are those defined by the Free Software Foundation: the freedom to use the software for any purpose, to study it, to redistribute it and to redistribute modified versions of it.

Today's cloud computing software innovation is mostly open source. Open source innovation leads in all compartments of the cloud computing stack: virtualization, VM management, security, file systems, monitoring, big data, broker, etc. A fertile terrain for free and open source software communities.

However, as we all know, what customers get with cloud computing is a service, not software. With cloud computing, software is hosted and vendors do not distribute it. Since the code is no longer circulating, improvements to the software are no longer shared.

Is cloud computing changing the fate of open source software communities? Open source software community members are the primary implementors of the software, they create value directly for the end user. With cloud computing, the value creators are the hosting companies; they mediate the software value creation process and they have the ability to generate new kind of proprietary lock-in, foe example at the data level.

Whereas IT freedom used to be broadly defined in terms of software accessibility, in the age of cloud computing it must now be defined in terms of service accessibility and data freedom. How do we define free service? Is open data the new open source? Is cloud computing a paradigm shift that makes open source claims irrelevant? What does “open” and “free” mean in the age of cloud computing? What new challenges are posed to free and open source software communities?

    Who should attend:

    • community leaders and contributors

    • cloud computing architects

    • hosting companies' executives

    • students and developers

    • CIO's concerned by vendor lock-in

Come and join renowned community leaders and practitioners : Leslie Hawthorn (Red Hat), Lars Kurth (Xen), Dave Neary (Red Hat), Simon Phipps (Open Source Initiative), Cedric Thomas (OW2), and Ross Turk (Ceph), Ralph Mueller (eclipse.org); come share your opinion, your questions, your concerns in a lively interactive session.

Cloud Computing and the Xen Community,
    Lars Kurth (Xen)

The Xen Hypervisor open source project was founded in 2003 as a direct result of Cambridge Universities XenoServer research project that defined Cloud Computing as we know it today. In 2006 Amazon Web Services built their business on top of Xen, followed by Slicehost and many other cloud and hosting providers. In other words: the Xen project provided the technology that enabled many multi-million dollar businesses to thrive. However, until recently cloud and service providers have not been active members of the Xen community. This talk will look at characteristics of the Xen community, its evolution over time, consider licensing and related topics. We will also look at incentives to engage service providers and help them become more active members of your open source community.

Compromise and Collaboration: Engaging FOSS Contributors in the Age of Cloud Computing, Leslie Hawthorn

As FOSS communities look to bring on new contributors, we're faced with a fundamental challenge - our new would-be users, contributors and advocates are largely operating in a world of non-free software. While the fact that most folks are using proprietary software - and that FOSS advocates would prefer they use FOSS - is nothing new, the rise of cloud computing puts a different spin on the problem. The ease of use promised by software as a service applications, the ubiquity and popularity of non-free social networks and the great increase in non-free real-time communications tools presents us with a more difficult use case: how do we convince folks of the value of FOSS when they expect things to "just work" and want to "hang out" where their friends are?

In this talk, Leslie Hawthorn will explore the tensions between effectively engaging our audience of would-be converts to FOSS while maintaining the values of software freedom. Specifically, she will explore the activist roots of the free software movement and how these
activist principles can be channelled to effectively amplify the value of FOSS amongst users of cloud services and other non-free tools. Last but not least, she will discuss some libre tools that can be used in our community outreach activities, allowing us to effectively engage with
our audience's user experience expectations while preserving software freedom in our discourse.

Any App, Any Cloud, Your Way".

"Open Source Software Brings New Freedom to the Cloud",Cyril Reinhard, Acquia

The rise of SaaS, software delivered as a service, is having an enormously disruptive impact on the software industry. Forrester Research estimates that spending on SaaS technology will double by 2013, representing 16% of all software spend. Gartner Research estimates that SaaS software spend is growing at 18%, compounded annually, and will reach $23B by 2015.
At the same time, open source adoption in the enterprise is reaching a tipping point. According to Accenture, 77% of high performance organizations are piloting or committing to open source.
Organizations large and small are looking to SaaS applications to reduce costs and simplify software application management. SaaS provides organizations with a mechanism to reduce their spend on application management, costs that can consume the IT budget. What can open source software do for organizations looking for a cheaper and more flexible SaaS environment?
    The presentation will examine:
What is driving the rapid ascent of SaaS?
How can an organization take advantage of both SaaS efficiency and open source innovation – at the same time?
Best practices and case study examples of organisations leveraging the latest developments in open source software

"Sungards aspirations, their technology choices and the problems encountered on the journey", Simon Withers, Sungard & Giles Sirett, Shapeblue

Sungard, is one of the worlds leading software and technology services companies. The objective of this project was to build a global IaaS hosting platform that would allow Sungard’s customers to benefit from the efficiencies of a automated, self service model whilst maintaining the high degree of service associated with Sungard.
The Sungard cloud has been built on Apache CloudStack technology, with Sunagrd recently deciding to become the 2nd biggest contributors to this Apache project.
This case study will talk through Sungards aspirations, their technology choices and the problems encountered on the journey.

"Creating cloud-compatible code right from the start", Fabrice Bernhard, Theodo

My goal : find a way, in a "devops" mindset, to strongly encourage Theodo developers to create cloud-compatible code right from the start for our clients, using open-source solutions
The solution : make the developers responsible for the automatic provisioning and deployment of their testing environment used by the product owner and for which they are responsible (the development method is SCRUM)
The technical details : using LXC, an open-source, highly efficient virtualisation solution for Linux environments, we created a farm of empty systems which are destroyed and recreated in a matter of seconds. This ensures that the developers really automate every detail of the system configuration they need for the effective deployment of their software using as automation tools Python's Fabric and Fabtools. These are the most developer-friendly provisioning solutions we found. The same scripts are then used for cloud provisioning in production, ensuring maximal documentation and easy redeployment
Additional gain : with another process involving backup and data-sharing, the development team is able to develop highly scalable and high-availability applications right from the start, without additional costs

"Lessons Learned - building a large scale cloud with CloudStack", Frits Vlaanderen, LeaseWeb

In this talk, I'll give a tour behind the scenes of a project to build a
CloudStack-based public cloud, that scaled up to thousands of live
customers within half a year. Focus points are lessons learned, designing
a modular platform, and practical pointers that will help you roll your
own. A few examples of challenges we faced:
    - Scaling to thousands while keeping performance on par
    - Designing your storage system for redundancy and speed
    - Tweak

FLOSS Prospective 2012
    Thursday October 11, 2012 3:30pm - 6:00pm @ Room Londres

PROSPECTIVE SUMMIT 2012 - OPEN SOURCE: THE NEXT WAVE

Over the past five years, Open Source has definitively established itself as the invisible driving force behind the digital revolution. With overwhelming leadership in the Cloud computing market and a rise to increasing dominance among the key devices of the post-PC era: smartphones. A colossal victory despite the battle it was expected to face. If Linux and Android Open Stack are now seen as the benchmarks at either end of the digital spectrum, it’s not because they have made the age old dream come true, of competing against Microsoft Office or Windows and coming out on top. But because they have actually reinvented the whole concept of how digital technology is used, with the advent of the Cloud and hyper-mobility. At the dawn of a new decade, what does the future hold in store for us? Everything seems rosy for Open Source. It’s temping to assume that current trends will continue. But will Big Data, PaaS, social networks and the Internet of Things really emerge as the next phase in the evolution of Open Source? Or will there be new developments, that will change the rules of the game yet again? From Open Hardware to Fab Labs, will new disruptive concepts transform the technological battlefield? Will the rise of business consortia and the growing involvement of emerging powers transform ecosystems and business models? And above all, will the battle for openness shift from the code itself towards services and data? Much more than just a simple assessment of the current state of Open Source, the next Open World Forum ‘Prospective Summit’ is designed to fuel a truly insightful and forward-looking debate. With one clear objective: to cut through the constant noise of technological innovation and map the real shape of things to come, to try to picture emerging scenarios and come up with concrete recommendations for communities, businesses and institutions alike.

Internet of Open Stuff
    Friday October 12, 2012 9:30am - 12:00pm @ Room Paris

Council as a linktank between professionals, tends each time more to consider the internet of things as a global evolution fostering new relation between people their productions and their planet. By uniting professionnal transversally Council during the past 5 years aims to foster crossthinking and exchange leading to creative solutions in the field.

The Internet of Things is no longer a vision, it is becoming real. This technological ecology of ipv6, wifi, barcodes, QR codes and RFID is fostering transparency in decision making processes. As such it appears that it is not so much endusers that have to worry about it, as well as institutions, governments and companies who have things to hide or isolate for some reason. With over twenty IoT startups, a growing open source hardware movement, full blown computers for 25 dollars (Raspberry Pi) and Arduino microprocessors for the same price, a growing global consciousness that forces of competition have led us to brink of disaster, it makes no sense to despair, be negative or worry about your privacy or security. On the contrary, without be overtly optimistic, the agency of end users to group and form new alliances with actors from business and governance structures has never been so great. In this panel we want to explore these new alliances that favor collaboration and sharing, want to find new business models, are in favor of top down planning and bottom up co-creation, and building new decision making tools that cater to the way the balance the planet, humans, animals and our futures.

When artists as Konstantin Schmoelzer who uses his daily life on internet as a creative material, stands front with activists and engaged political like Amelia Andersdotter who daily defends privacy and open soucre issues at the european parliament, Council practically tackles issues of personnal connectivity. Industry people joign the thinktank grounding our thoughts by proposing concrete situation, Stefan Ferber experiences the real life issues in the production of Bosch's mobile solutions, Alicia Asin, pragmatically puts the richness of her theoretical economical and legislative knowledge to the service of production using new open source hardware possibilities, and Hans Juergen Kugler leads consultancy in the domain. Therefore the Council panel aims to reflect this wideness of thoughts anchoring our desire to overcome discourses and find ways to use the new agency given by the wide distribution of personnal devices autonomously connecting to the network, considering the actual individual possibility to generate and exchange all data, wether personal or public as a great source of creativity and agency.

Being aware of essential collective issues in data protection, is also a mean to go forward in  building new projects with planetary views; when connectivity ameliorates exchanges, better communication generates possibilities of education throughout the world and being actively present on the edge issues is a necessity. Therefore, Council promotes crossthinking to understand how economical exchanges can constructively be enhanced by current absolutely pervasive connectivity thatlinks every point in the planet, far for talking of a global remedy it is important to acknowledge how connecting our things thoughts data leads to new local global exchanges valorising communities in the system, and letting a new accesses to powerfull forms of organisation to small production, the far away one'sand the individual allowing to share information on a personnal scale.

    • Workflow allocations and scheduling on IaaS platforms, from theory to practice, Adrian Muresan

The workflow application pattern is very common across scientific domains. In a traditional grid environment, scientist have to compete with each
other for compute resources which often leads to over-provisioning and under-use of resources. In addition, workflow applications have a non-constant demand of resources and therefore in a traditional environment involving static resource allocations, a part of the resources will not be used. This is an inefficient use of resources.

The current work addresses the problem of resource allocation for non-deterministic workflows under budget constraints. This talk will present an approach for using on-demand resource allocations for scientific workflow applications. With on-demand resources we can
satisfy the application usage needs without over-provisioning which leads to a higher usage efficiency. We present a way of transforming the initial problem into sub-problems that have been studied before. We propose two new allocation algorithms that are capable of determining resource allocations under budget constraints and we present ways of using them to address the problem at hand.

We have tested our approach by using DIET (MADag)
as a workflow engine, Nimbus as an IaaS resource provider and a real-world scientific workflow application called RAMSES, used for n-body simulations of dark-matter particles that represent the backbone of galaxies.

OSDC
    Friday October 12, 2012 10:00am - 7:00pm @ Room Londres

    -------------------------

The goal of OSDC.fr is to gather developers from various communities around groundbreaking technologies in the world of open source development in all the free and open source languages, like Perl, Python, Ruby, PHP, SmallTalk and many more. The main goal is to learn by discovering new tricks in new languages: there is often a lot to learn by tackling concepts and techniques not tied to a particular programming language.

This conference mainly targets developers and advanced users of free and open source software. The idea is to be able to talk tech without fear of not being understood. It thus proposes a place to present these kinds of inter-language talks in a neutral setting, outside of the specific context of a particular language community.

(tl;dr: advanced, technical and cool subjects ;-)

    • Wallflower is ready to not dance, Philippe Bruhat

    • What's coming up in GCC 4.8, Dodji Seketeli

This talk (in French) will present the improvements of the upcoming GCC 4.8. The areas covered by the talk are going to be:

    - C language improvements
    - C++ language improvements
    - General optimizations
    - Compiler architecture

    • MinGW-w64 - Windows application build made easy, Christophe Fergeau

Doing Windows builds of software developed on Linux systems has always been hard and boring, and not many people attempt it.
Thanks to the hard work done by the MinGW-w64 people, it's now possible to do these builds comfortably from your Linux system with your usual tools.

This talk will show you how to use the MinGW-w64 toolchain on Linux, starting from the build of a simple Hello World program to a more complex gtk+ application, ending with the generation of an installer ready to deploy on a Windows system, all of that from your warm and cozy Linux terminal

Education, Jobs & FLOSS
    Friday October 12, 2012 11:00am - 4:30pm @ Room Berlin

Exchanging business cards before the next disaster: Investing in the value between institutions and informal collectives for humanitarian relief
    Friday October 12, 2012 11:15am - 12:00pm @ Auditorium

Today we may think that the world is more connected than ever. While there are pathways for many of the 7 billion people in the world to be connected, we are likely connected to those who are like ourselves or have similar interests. During her keynote on the theme of "Humanitarian Free & Open Source Software", Heather Blanchard, a graduate student of global communications at the American University of Paris, will outline the gap between those within institutions such as governments, non-profits and companies and the increasing amount of informal collectives who cluster together in community projects, global movements or just communities of interest. Institutions and informal collectives keep colliding with each other during crisis events rather than creating long-term investment to build sustainable bridges of dialogue and collaboration.  Heather will focus her discussion to illustrate the rise of digital humanitarian informal collectives and how their actions illustrate gaps in service, challenge business models, create new influences in public policy and are beginning to shift the dialogue and collaboration between institutions and informal collectives within international and domestic crisis response systems.

From the vision and forward-thinking of PaaS leaders such CloudBees and Google, to BigData pioneers in graph-oriented databases such as Neo4j or batch processing such as Apache Hadoop, come join the industry leaders and exchange with them freely.

    --------------------------

    Programme:

    12h00 - 12h45

Building an Open M2M community one step at a time, Benjamin Cabé, Sierra Wireless

It is widely agreed that there will be devices in the range of billions communicating with each other by the end of this decade. From the alarm system in your house, to your power-meter being part of a smart grid, to the ATM around the corner, every object of your life will soon be connected to the Internet of Things, if not already.

This connected world is at the crossroads of various ecosystems that the Eclipse M2M Industry Working Group aims at bridging.

On one hand are the IT and telco industries, that already are connecting devices together by means of usually closed software platforms and communication protocols. These industries have an incredible experience at designing solutions tailored to their vertical businesses, but today's challenge is to break down the silos preventing the emergence of the true Internet of Things: every object should virtually be accessible from anywhere.

On the other hand, there are many providers of great end-user services that are waiting for platforms allowing them to create their own applications using these services, that they can distribute on their own markets and via social networks.

Lastly, the Open Hardware and hobbyists movements are a place where a lot of innovation happens: bleeding edge technologies, passionate developers that can, and will, make Internet of Things not only successful, but also fun.

If you want to learn what is cooking at Eclipse in terms of tools and frameworks for M2M development, how we get the aforementioned communities actively involved, and the business models that this Open M2M stack is enabling, then this talk is for you!

    14h00 - 14h45 :

New Opportunities for Connected Data, Ian Robinson, Neotechnology

Today's complex data is not only big, but also semi-structured and densely connected. In this session we'll look at how size, structure and connectedness have converged to transform the data landscape, resulting in the birth of the many NOSQL databases. We'll then go on to look at some of the new opportunities for creating end-user value that have emerged in a world of connected data, illustrated with practical examples implemented using Neo4j, the world's leading graph database.

    14h45 - 15h30 :

    16h15 - 17h00 :

Powering Hadoop and Big Data with Eclipse, Cédric Carbone, Talend

Enterprises are faced with ever increasing amounts of data, and problems related to volume and usage demands have forced IT managers and developers to seek out new solutions. Fortunately, this has resulted in an explosion of innovation in massively parallel processing and non-relational data storage. Apache Hadoop, an open source software platform, has quickly become the technology of choice for large organizations in need of sophisticated analysis and transformation of petabytes of structured and complex data.

Cédric Carbone will discuss how users can access, manipulate and store huge volumes of data in Hadoop and benefit from high-performance, cost-optimized data integration with ultimate scalability.

During this session, attendees will learn how to:

    • Leverage the explosive growth of data

    • Deploy and tap into the powerful architecture of Hadoop thanks to an Eclipse based graphical interface • Process massive data volumes through a combination of Hadoop and open source architecture

Funding and Promoting Software Freedom Development via Non-Profits
    Friday October 12, 2012 12:10pm - 12:30pm @ Auditorium

Free, Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS) began as a not-for-profit endeavor.  FLOSS licenses have, of course, always permitted both commercial and non-commercial activity.  However, the heart of FLOSS development remains in the not-for-profit space.  For example, much of the early GNU software that makes up our modern GNU/Linux systems was written by staff developers employed by the Free Software Foundation (FSF) , whom the FSF paid to write that software and release it under Free Software licenses.

In recent years, non-profits have been somewhat underutilized to advance software freedom.  Most projects now organize informally, with both volunteer and corporate contributors.  Informal affiliations have their advantage, but lack of a formal organization can often lead to missed opportunities for the project.

Non-profit organizational structure has serious advantages for FLOSS projects.  Non-profits exist as "neutral territory" for a project's community.  Funders (which can include for-profit companies, non-profit grant-making institutions and individuals) can give through the non-profit to support the activity of the project as a whole,,instead of merely supporting one specific contributor.  Indeed, non-profits can advance the project's goals while benefiting the public good.  Additionally, governmental non-profit regulations provide verification processes to assure that a single for-profit vendor has not hijacked the project.

Most importantly, though, non-profits can collect donations and use those donations to pay developers to write new software.  This possibility has existed, and has been regularly used, since the early 1980s, but became less common in the late 1990s.  Most new projects seek for-profit business models, and often simply do not realize they could utilize a non-profit structure to fund their work without the quagmire of seeking profit: the work merely needs to break-even.

If projects wish to pursue these ideas, there are two main mechanisms to officially become a non-profit.  A project can create their own organization, or join an existing non-profit "fiscal sponsor" who handles the non-profit activity for the project.  This talk will cover the non-profit options that exist for FLOSS projects. Watership Down: Memoirs of a Digital Humanitarian,

Heather Blanchard, masters candidate in Global Communications at The American University in Paris

Heather Blanchard, a graduate candidate in Global Communications at the American University of Paris, will discuss her experiences and lessons learned on the digital frontlines of disaster response both within government at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and as a co-founder of CrisisCommons. Heather will share lessons learned from Haiti, Japan and New Zealand earthquakes, Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Isaac and outline opportunity, challenges, and best practices of open source software adoption for domestic emergency management and international humanitarian relief.

Introducing OpenMRS: Building Local Capacity through FOSS + Health IT,

     Leslie Hawthorn & Julius Awakame

OpenMRS is an open source platform to manage electronic medical records, originally designed in 2004 for use in the developing world but now used in a variety health care and research environments. In this session, attendee will learn about the origins of the OpenMRS, details on some of OpenMRS deployment sites throughout the world and how to participate in this thriving community. Best of all, attendees will learn how the OpenMRS development team built in a specific focus for building local IT capacity in the communities served by its code base and how this focus led to educational programs for developers in Africa.

EUROSHA - training European aid workers in Open Source tools, Mark Prutsalis

Humanitarian free and open source software organizations the Sahana Software Foundation, Groupe URD, OpenStreetMap France, and the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team have partnered with France Volontaires and other European humanitarian volunteer organizations on a pilot project being sponsored by the EU under the newly adopted EU Aid Volunteers Initiative.  The objective of the EUROSHA project (for "EURopean Open Source Humanitarian Aid") is to train and deploy a small group of volunteers to four disaster prone African countries.  They will be conducting humanitarian information and data collection using open source tools such as Sahana Eden and OpenStreetMap.  The four countries participating in the project are Burundi, the Central African Republic, Chad and Kenya.

    • Décrypthon, David Loureiro, Sysfera

Technological advances in distributed computing have made it possible to efficiently use either Grid computing (networked resources that belong to an organization) or Desktop computing (PCs being used when idle, connected to the Internet). This opportunity has been seized all over the world by organizations and enthusiastic individuals looking to advance science and foster collaboration between scientists, by providing them a computing platform to perform in-silico research. The Décrypthon project is an example of one such high-performance platform. In this talk, we will describe the project, detail the platform's architecture and explore the piece of middleware that was developed and used for it. Real-life examples of applications used for both Grid and Desktop computing will be discussed.

    • Sigmah, open source antidote trial to the aid sector infoxication issue, Olivier Sarrat, URD

Aid sector workers are suffocating. Too much data to deal with in input, and too much information to produce to be accountable to all their donors. And this infoxication issue leads directly to a quality issue. Moreover, turn-over rates are extremely high in NGOs, and consequently the effort to implement some new guidelines or tools to deal with this infoxication are terribly difficult. Sigmah is a project started and managed by an open group of NGOs trying to solve this situation.

    • Aspect Oriented Programming on PHP, Gérald Croes

Progress toward a FLOSS Competence Center Network
    Friday October 12, 2012 4:30pm - 7:00pm @ Room Berlin

FLOSS Competence Centers are being created around the world to assist people and organizations in finding and using free and open source software for work and personal use. Individual Centers differ widely in their size, goals, target audience, areas of expertise, style of delivery, and sources of funding. Despite these differences, there are many opportunities for the Centers to share knowledge and materials that can help everyone do their work more effectively. This session surveys the status of existing Competence Centers, and identifies shared interests and goals for their improvement and expansion.  An additional focus is on the development of a FLOSS Body of Knowledge that can help identify a common core of knowledge that can serve as a foundation for FLOSS education.

    Friday October 12, 2012 5:00pm - 7:00pm @ Room Paris

    Gavagai, Nils Grunwald, linkfluence

    Saturday October 13, 2012 1:00pm - 3:00pm @ Room Milan

    WebWorkersCamp5

NoSQL, Message Queues, Asynchronous programming, Web Sockets, Distributed Applications, Workers, HTML5 & CSS3, Decentralized Social Networks… and to the list of buzzwords we should add... CUDA, Parallelisms, Big Data Streams, Rapsberry Pi... sure to be hot topics in 2013 !

This is the fifth (already!) Parisian meetup for all those who like making fun architectures, and the second during the Open World Forum. This meeting is a great moment to learn and share experiences on the current best practices.

    What is the WebWorkersCamp?

Nowadays we don't create applications anymore, we create platforms. Platforms consist in several software layers and their orchestration make the success or failure of our projects. This orchestration, with respect to best practices, also makes the beauty of our developments.

The WebWorkersCamp is a meet-up for those wondering how to build robust platforms that can scale with traffic and evolve. This meeting targets both people working on general public applications and people who experimented the newest adequate technologies (asynchronous programming, websockets, NoSQL, waiting queues...). Individual developers, entrepreneurs, CIO and decision makers are invited to meet the actors of this great transformation in the IT landscape.

As for the previous editions, this BarCamp will be the occasion to exchange around the "fun/funny architectures" thematic: software architectures, real-time / distributed applications, decentralized social networks and all the components you need in your stack (NoSQL, asynchronous programming, messages queues...). These are the topics we announce, but you are the campers and you make the event! Don't be shy, come and share (whether you speak French or English)!

Of course we are preparing some stuff, inviting some people... but the last editions shown us that some of the best working groups came from regular campers! So you’re invited to propose short sessions and presentations about what you like and know on the dedicated Camp page, and also present yourself.

    What is BarCamp?

Wikipedia : a BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense and interactive event with discussions, demos, and interaction from attendees.

HacKidemia
    Saturday October 13, 2012 2:00pm - 5:00pm @ Room Paris
